Cows, Trails, and More Cows at Stonewall Farm in Keene

Last spring, on one of the first warm days, my mother-in-law suggested that we take the kiddos to Stonewall Farm in Keene.  Stonewall Farm is a working dairy and provides organic milk for Stonyfield Organics — which means there are lots of cows.  I love cows.  I’m not really sure why, but I can’t get enough of their cute faces and crazy eyes.  So, of course, we met my mother-in-law at the farm.

The barn was across the street from where we parked, so the first thing we did was walk over to see the animals.  We saw horses out front and . . . baby cows (aka calves)!!

After visiting those animals, we went into the cow barn.  And boy were there cows…lots of cows!!!

He’s clearly my son; he loves cows, too!!
How can you not love that face?!

They also had some adolescent cows out in a separate area so the kiddos were able to see that cows grow up, just like them!

After we had seen all of the cows, we went back across the street and had some lunch.  We brought a picnic and sat next to a little pond and watched some ducks.  After lunch, we played on their outdoor playground to burn some energy! They even have a toddler swing and an old tractor on which the kiddos could play.

After the playground, we decided to explore some of the trails around the farm (see the trail map here).  During our walk we passed a few greenhouses.  One of them had a farmer inside tending to some seedlings and she took a few minutes to show us some different plants and explained how she was caring for them. It was super interesting! The trails we walked were pretty easy and meandered through the woods.  There were also pages from storybooks attached to trees throughout the woods; there are certain trails you can follow that lead you around to each page! Definitely a fun activity to engage the kiddos while walking.

Stonewall Farm is certainly a fun place to visit! From meeting cows and horses to enjoying time in the woods, it offers a number of different activities for the kiddos.  I do recommend bringing a carrier if you have a little one who isn’t walking yet.  Although the barn and playground area were stroller friendly, I ended up carrying my little in my Tula for our walk; because the trails meander through the woods, they aren’t really stroller friendly.

I hope that your family enjoys this adventure as much as my family did!
